ASSINIBOIA — Local Legion branches around Saskatchewan will receive much-appreciated funding from the Saskatchewan Veteran Service Club Support Program, provided by the Government of Saskatchewan. Through this grant, 81 Legion branches will be receiving grants of up to $30,000 according to a Saskatchewan.ca media release.
While Legions around the province fundraise, the main way these branches raise money for repairs is through grants issued by the government and other organizations
Aging membership and lack of new members make it taxing on those still active in Legions and they are tasked with maintenance and operations.
Gravelbourg Legion was one of the recipients of this funding. We reached out to their organization but as of press time had not received details of their use of the funds.
Legion branches, like Unity, have allocated their funding to upgrading their bathrooms to be accessible to all as well as updating the hall with more energy-efficient and affordable LED lighting. Maidstone Legion was allocating funding towards a new furnace.
The Fur Lake Veteran’s Retreat, located 100 miles from North Battleford, received $28,441.55 in support. George Shupe, one of the founders of the organization, said the money is being used to get power to their location as some of the attendees have hearing aids or breathing machines making power a necessity.
