REGINA — K+S Potash Canada has announced it is donating $1 million to the Regina Food Bank and the Saskatoon Food Bank to help support their various programs.
“Together with our partners we seek to make an impact that will resonate for generations to come by advancing education, growth and resilience for youth in the communities we live and work,” said K+S Potash’s Chelsea Latridis. ‘
“This includes an investment of $500,000 each to the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, and the Regina Food Hub over the next five years”.
The demand for the services food banks provide in this province has been continuing to grow. The increases in the cost of living from taxation to fuel to food impact the most vulnerable in Saskatchewan.
Regina’s Food Bank sees more than 15,000 people per month, with more than 40 per cent of them being children. Saskatoon’s food bank has even higher numbers with more than 25,000 people utilizing the food bank every month.
One of the programs that will benefit is the School Food Program in Regina. It feeds more than 2,500 students every week, as well as offering weekend snack packs, pantry items and access to a summer hamper when school is not in session.
K+S also sponsors the play structure and basketball court at the new Regina Food Hub, which is in the core neighbourhood on Broad.
