CANORA- The community celebration for the 31 members of the Canora Composite School graduating class of 2022 was held on June 29. It started with a parade through Canora, where residents could catch a glimpse of the grads in their finest formal attire.
The graduation exercises then commenced in Canora’s King George Park, where emcees Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen welcomed family and friends of the graduates to the celebration.
“It’s nice to see that the rain left us alone long enough so we could celebrate this special occasion,” said Lowes.
Each graduate was introduced to the audience individually as they made their way to the stage area. This was followed by a time for everyone to take photographs of the graduating class as a group.
One of the highlights of the graduation exercises was the presentation of the scholarship winners.
Abby Wilson was the winner of the Canora RCMP scholarship. Bella Mykytyshyn won the Beta Sigma Phi scholarship and the Town of Canora scholarship.
The CIBC scholarship went to Jamie Katryniuk. Brendon Landstad won the Canora & District Fire Rescue scholarship, and one of two Canora Ag Society scholarships. Codee Kopelchuk won the second Canora AG Society scholarship, as well as scholarships from Nutrien Ag Solutions and Richardson Pioneer. Brody Harrison won the second Richardson Pioneer scholarship.
Lexie Biletski earned scholarships from Gateway Co-op and Aspen Paramedic Services (formerly Canora Ambulance Care). The Canora Hospital Auxiliary scholarship was won by Elley Tomcala. Cassidy Zuravloff was the winner of the Community Insurance scholarship.
Breanne Woloshyn was the winner of the Crossroads Credit Union scholarship. The Leson’s Funeral Home scholarship was earned by Kaylie Donovan, who also won one of two Good Spirit Teachers Association scholarships. The second GSTA scholarship went to Drea Beblow, who also won the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League scholarship.
Clay Sleeva was the winner of the Darryl Rock Memorial scholarship.
Following the recognition of the scholarship winners, Principal Kim Eiteneier presented scrolls to each of the 31 graduates.
During his remarks to the graduates, Terry Dennis, Canora-Pelly MLA, congratulated the group “on this special day of achievement. It’s a great honour to be here today to be part of this celebration.
“One good thing to come out of COVID-19 is we now have this great venue here at King George Park for graduation, as well as a wonderful parade along the streets of Canora,” said Dennis. “As you move on to the next phase of your life, I’m sure the challenges of these past few years will only make you stronger moving forward.
“Whether you pursue post-secondary education, career training, or join the workforce, remember that there are a lot of opportunities in Saskatchewan as we continue to grow and see investments and companies growing. For instance, I graduated from high school in Canora, and I never left.”
“I would also like to congratulate the parents and teachers today. You have done a great job molding these young adults and our future leaders!”
After the program, graduates were joined by family and friends for the graduation banquet at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre.
