Preeceville School hands out graduation awards and scholarships

Students honoured and acknowledged at outdoor graduation ceremony held in Preeceville.

PREECEVILLE - Arlene Prestie, on behalf of the Preeceville School, presented the Preeceville School graduates with awards and scholarships during its graduation ceremony on June 17.

"It is my sincere pleasure to lead the awards portion of this ceremony in this lovely setting on such a beautiful afternoon, and for a group of truly remarkable young people," said Prestie.

"It feels like September and the beginning of your Grade 12 year was just yesterday, but here we are, celebrating your graduation day, and this significant milestone, as you leave the comfort of high school and home and find your way in the next chapter of possibilities,” said Prestie.

The recipients of the awards were selected based on the applications submitted and the criteria outlined by the scholarships sponsors.

Graduates received numerous awards and scholarships from local organizations and businesses.

Katryna Englot received the Gateway Co-op Scholarship for $200 which is awarded to a student with a high average who will be enrolled in post-secondary study next fall. Englot also received the Preeceville Lions Club $500 scholarship which recognized the contributions of students in the community who demonstrate the qualities of good citizenship.

Eric Dodge received the two $500 scholarships for academic excellence. The first scholarship was for the highest combined average in the English Language Arts (ELA) A 30 and ELA B30 courses. The second was for the highest average in the three 30-level courses. The scholarships were both sponsored by Dr. Richard Krauss and his wife Ivy. Dodge received a Preeceville Lions Club $500 scholarship and a Preeceville Hospital Auxiliary $300 scholarship for a student entering a health field.

Dodge also received the $2,000 Frank Arnie Memorial Scholarship which was created by his family to honor his memory as principal, vice-principal and an active leader in the Preeceville community. He loved teaching and was genuinely concerned about the education and well-being of his students, staff and other people he served. He was a truly remarkable person who lived life fully and with intention.

Kiera Balyski received the Preeceville Chamber of Commerce $250 bursary, with the criteria of writing an essay explaining the importance of supporting the local community. Balyski won the Preeceville Figure Skating Club bursary for $200 that recognized the contributions of a graduate who has assisted in the instruction of young skaters. She was also presented with the Crossroads Credit Union scholarship for $500; the award is based on involvement in the community, extra-curricular participation, integrity, leadership, volunteerism and academic achievement.

Trever Geistlinger received the Preeceville Firefighters scholarship for $100 that recognizes a student of high academic achievement who has been accepted to post-secondary education. Geistlinger also received the School Community Council $250 scholarship for a student who is a positive role model and shows strong character and integrity, and enrolled in a post-secondary study in a trade or technical field.

Tyrell Karpyk received the Endeavour Home and School Scholarship for $100 that recognized a student entering a trade or technical field.

Lexluv Acosta received the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses, Preeceville $500 scholarship for a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Acosta also received the Preeceville Hospital Auxiliary $500 scholarship in memory of two special nurses: Marie Phoenix and Esther Paul. The scholarship is for a student entering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Caden Worobetz received the X-cessories by Kerry $100 scholarship for most improved.

The subject award medals were presented by Doug King, principal. Eric Dodge received medals in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. Merlin Kovacs received a medal for Practical Applied Arts, and Evan Bochnuik received the award for Physical Education.
