Easter fire and Kyrie Eleison

Pause for Reflection column by Ken Rolheiser

The best way to live is with a song in your heart. Two songs served as inspiration for this reflection.

Easter season teases our souls every year. Like a moth to flame, we hover near the season鈥檚 celebrations but hesitate to plunge right in.

After the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday Resurrection celebrations we are caught again with the hopes and inspirations to continue our life鈥檚 journey.

In Start a Fire, the band Unspoken describes our world, which is 鈥渃old and bitter鈥 at times; 鈥淔eels like we鈥檙e in the dead of winter waiting for something better. The song continues:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚 hear Your voice in my head

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淟et Your light shine, let Your light shine for all to see.

Then the chorus says,

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淪tart a fire in my soul

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淔an the flame and make it grow

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淪o there's no doubt or denying

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淟et it burn so brightly

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭hat everyone around can see

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭hat it's You, that it's You that we need

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淪tart a fire in me.

Our after-Easter journey should be one with Jesus by our sides. Imagining Jesus with us in the boat when the seas are choppy, imagining Jesus in our car on a journey through an icy storm 鈥 these were thoughts I shared in an earlier article. That sounds easy enough.

As we continue life after Good Friday death and Easter Sunday Resurrection, another song echoes in my mind:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淜yrie eleison, down the road that I must travel

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淜yrie eleison, through the darkness of the night

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淜yrie eleison, where I'm going, will you follow?

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淜yrie eleison, on a highway in the light.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 John Lang鈥檚 lyrics and artists Mr. Mister with its 1980鈥檚 hit Kyrie speak of a fire that burns a 鈥済emlike flame. That muse still haunts me, like good music will:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭he wind blows hard against this mountain side

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淎cross the sea into my soul

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚t reaches into where I cannot hide

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淪etting my feet upon the road.

Yes, my memories go back to:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲hen I was young I thought of growing old

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淥f what my life would mean to me

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲ould I have followed down my chosen road

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淥r only wished what I could be.

The marvel of Easter is in getting to know Jesus a little better. Incredibly, God still stands on the path like a Prodigal Father, hoping we will return to Him. More incredibly God is ready to forgive us and forgive us and forgive us, even when He knows we will falter again.

As we continue our life鈥檚 journey after Easter, may the 鈥淟ord have mercy鈥 song stay with us as we 鈥渇ind ourselves again:鈥
