YORKTOJN - School safety patrollers are back at work in Yorkton.
Each of the patrollers is sworn into their duty.
Last week patrollers from St. Alphonsus School had their induction at City Hall with Mayor Mitch Hippsley presiding over the swearing in.
Nicole Baptist, Bylaw and Safety Supervisor with the city told the patrollers the ceremony was a way to mark “the work you do as safety patrollers.
“The work you do when wearing that vest . . . is important. You help keep your fellow students safe.”
Hippsley congratulated the youth “on stepping up” to be part of an important program. He said it shows that even youth are part of the community and can have a positive impact.
“Please recognize everybody is important. Everything you do is important,” he said. “You are going to make a difference.”
The program, now in its second year, is a response to a student request.
In May 2022, the Grade 6 Safety Patrol members from St. Paul’s School presented to City Council requesting that Council look at ways they can support the Safety Patrollers in Yorkton.
Following direction from Council, the Protective Services Committee and City Administration are holding Safety Patroller Installation Ceremonies for any interested elementary schools in Yorkton with safety patrol programs.
The first installation ceremonies were held in the fall of 2022 for the student safety patrollers.
Baptist said all eight elementary schools in the city are involved in the program with about 250 students involved.
