Seniors using new technology to do more reading

“It is pretty cool when an 85-year-old senior is able to use technology to help him or her read,” said Jennifer Bisschop, the Canora Composite School librarian.

“It is pretty cool when an 85-year-old senior is able to use technology to help him or her read,” said Jennifer Bisschop, the Canora Composite School librarian.

Since the Canora Public Library and the CCS library share the space, both Bisschop and Deb Leson, the public librarian, have started a service by which they help senior download ebooks onto iPads, tablets and Kobos.

Some of the seniors have vision loss and have difficulties reading a normal book, said Bisschop. By downloading ebooks they can increase the font size to be as large as they like. “I love the idea of people being able to read books again that otherwise wouldn’t be able to,” Bisschop said. “With new technology, the role of libraries is changing.”

For seniors with a valid library card, the library also has many free things that seniors can access from their devices, she said. There are more than 14,000 newspapers from around the world, movies, magazines and audio books, just to name a few.
