Swimming pool staff hired

The Canora swimming pool staff for the 2016 season were hired at the March 1 meeting of Canora town council. Hired as manager was JilliAnn Sawatsky, while the assistant manager is Philomina Mykytyshyn.

            Full-time guards hired were: Kelly Bazuik, Scott Popoff and Nicholas Chodak. Part-time guards are: Chelsi Reay, Sheldon Newberg, Paige Shyiak, Janayah Merriam, Abbey Sakal, and Jill Gulka. Hired as casual guards are Brett Popoff, Mackenzie Gulka, Emmaline Mykytyshyn, Ashley Stusek and Jensen Gabora.

            Council authorized the sale of Lot 43, Block 73, Plan 76Y004789 to Chris Chutskoff for the purpose of relocating a house thereon; and further that title be transferred upon completion of construction or authorization of a $10,000 performance bond in favour of the Town.

            Council agreed to enter into a natural gas supply agreement with Â鶹´«Ã½ Energy for a term of five years commencing November 1, 2016 at a price of $3.96/GJ.

            Two non-profit museum grants were approved for 2016: Canora Ukrainian Heritage Museum, $2,500, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, $1,000.

            A three-year ice rental fee policy for the Civic Centre was passed. The rates for the period starting January 1, 2016 (2017 and 2018 rates in parenthesis) are as follows: in-town youth and minor sports, $68 ($72 and $76); out-of-town youth and minor sports, $92 ($97 and $102); in-town senior and adult users, $89 ($94 and $99); and out-of-town adult users, $141 ($149 and $157). All the mentioned rates include GST.

            Council acknowledged the provincial school division mill rates for 2016 as follows: agricultural property, 2.67 mills; residential property, 5.03 mills; commercial/industrial property, 8.28 mills; and resource property, 11.04 mills.

            At the March 15 meeting, council approved a $1,000 seniors’ recreation grant for the Canora Keen Age Society.

            It was agreed to extend Rod Petrychyn’s landfill operator contract for one year, in accordance with Section 3(a) of Bylaw 15-02.

            A bid of $6,325 was accepted from Ludba Construction for the demolition of the building at 337 Fifth Avenue East.

            Council accept the resignation of Linda Szabo, a casual caretaker, effective March 15.
