鈥淚n this fast-paced world driven by social media and 24-hour news cycles, how many of us can remember what happened last week, much less 36 years ago?聽 Yet if you ask millions of Canadians what they recall from 1980 they have one reply: Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
鈥淚n the early days of his run in 1980, Terry was an unknown runner on a lonely road, said a release from Nicole Broom, public relations assistant for the Terry Fox Foundation. 鈥淚t was in the face of this kind of adversity that Terry formed his indomitable spirit. Every one of the more than 800 Terry Fox Runs in Canada reflects that same spirit, immersed with a sense of hope that inspires and motivates every participant.
鈥淗undreds of thousands of people across Canada are expected to participate in the 36th Annual Terry Fox Run on September 18,鈥� the release said. 鈥淭he Run, an all-inclusive, family-oriented activity, has become a fall tradition in Canada.鈥�
鈥淚t鈥檚 an event that many schools in Saskatchewan take part of and it keeps Terry鈥檚 dreams alive,鈥� said Heather MacKenzie, interim provincial director of the Saskatchewan division. 鈥淗owever, there are opportunities for the entire community of Canora to come together and share in the spirit of this event. We are excited that Saskatchewan is instrumental in the raising of funds for cancer research.鈥�
鈥淎s a volunteer-driven organization, we seek an enthusiastic individual who possesses exceptional leadership qualities and has the ability to motivate and mobilize a volunteer team,鈥� the release said. 鈥淢aterials and training will be provided by the Foundation.
鈥淲hat matters most today, what compelled Terry to finish that 26th mile every day, is the knowledge that nothing is tougher to deal with than a diagnosis of cancer,鈥� it said. 鈥淭erry鈥檚 legacy continues to positively affect countless people and lead to breakthroughs not imaginable when he set out on his historic Marathon of Hope 36 years ago.
