YORKTON - January’s Open Cinema screening hosted by the Yorkton Film Festival had a local connection.

The Garlic Garden and Anna and Darrel Schaab was featured on the Flat Out Food Series - Garlic episode, which was screened at the Yorkton Public Library Tuesday.

“Initially Jenn Sharp interviewed us when she wrote her book Flat Out Foods in 2019,” explained Anna Schaab.

“In 2022, she reached out to us again to see if we would be willing to be interviewed for the Flat Out Foods TV series.”

And so it was set and a crew rolled into the Garlic Garden one day.

“When the crew arrived, it was a tad surreal,” said Schaab. “We both felt that how the heck would we spend 12 hours talking about the garlic plant.

“It was a new experience, which the entire crew made sure to have us feel comfortable with educating them about our world.”

So what were the Schaabs expecting out of the film?

“We thought the experience was a once in a lifetime, and we were both grateful to have had the opportunity to do it,” said Anna.

Even with the finished film it was just about seeing what had been created.

“Since we didn’t know what to expect, nor had any visions for it, the overall production was very professional and made us even more proud of being called Saskatchewan farmers,” said Anna Schaab.

Then there was the screening with many friends and family in attendance, itself a rather unique experience.

Schaab said it was “overwhelming with the amount of support. The questions were intimate and it was nice to spend one-on-one time with people that share our passion for growing food..

“It’s always nice to chat garlic with whoever is interested!”
