YORKTON - Kathy Ziglo has long been recognized as an accomplished golfer.

Now the successes of the Yorkton-born Ziglo are being recognized in the city of her birth as she will be among those inducted into the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on Sept. 9.

When asked what her reaction to the announcement was, Ziglo said it of course was special “Yorkton being my hometown. It’s always great to be recognized where you grew up.”

The selection was not one Ziglo was expecting, but it also was not outside the realm of possibility.

“I’m not going to say I was surprised. (But) it’s one of those things none of us think of,” she said, adding “I was never one where recognition was important.”

For Ziglo, who now resides in Saskatoon, the induction will have a definite family connection too, as she joins her father Vince Ziglo who was inducted in 1994 as a builder.

Ziglo, 50, said her selection is also good because it reflects well on the sport of golf in Yorkton.

“There’s been so many come out of Yorkton,” she told Yorkton This Week. “Yorkton has turned out some really great players.”

In Ziglo’s case she was swinging a golf club by 12, and while she played other sports – in particular ringette – golf became the one she loved best, which was a bit of a surprise.

“My personality . . . I was very much about team sport,” she said, but added once on the golf course she found the personal challenge gratifying.

“I’ve always been a problem solver and golf is a lot like that,” she said.

Ziglo said in team sports much is by designed plan, but in golf every shot leads to a bit of a puzzle how best to follow it up.

“How am I going to get myself out of this situation now?” she queried.

And that all developed within a family where golf was something they did together heading to the links for Mother’s or Father’s Day and other holidays for a round together, said Ziglo.

So when looking back over her career as a golfer what stands out for Ziglo?

Interestingly it was not a particular shot, round, or win.

“When I look back it’s the friendships,” she said, adding in many ways golf was “. . . my social life.”
