My Outlook - Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Quite some time ago, during week 11 of lockdown, I asked you to join me in a sing-a-long. With the passing of many months since then, I thought it might be a good time to join in song once again.

Quite some time ago, during week 11 of lockdown, I asked you to join me in a sing-a-long. With the passing of many months since then, I thought it might be a good time to join in song once again. This time let鈥檚 consider a show tune from a movie you may or may not admit to viewing (multiple times) in your life.

鈥淭he Sound of Music鈥 is one of the most watched musicals of all time and even those who don鈥檛 like the movie probably know the songs from it, including one that has emerged as a Christmas classic.

In the original Broadway production, the song 鈥淢y Favorite Things鈥 was performed in the Mother Abbess鈥檚 office, but those adapting the story for the screen thought it would be better if it took place in Maria鈥檚 bedroom so she could interact with the children. In the scene, the young governess comforts her charges during a storm by singing about her favorite things, hoping it will distract them from what鈥檚 going on outside.听

Today, instead of 鈥榬aindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens鈥, let鈥檚 switch it up a bit and think about where we were鈥nd where we are now. I think we鈥檝e got some things to sing about!

Started for us back in March 2020

Leaders and doctors gave updates a-plenty

Time to stay home was the message to all

There鈥檚 a pandemic that now casts a pall

Schools shut the doors so the classrooms went cyber

Children indoors became sliders and climbers

Offices now in the kitchen or den

When would we be back in meetings again?

When鈥檚 my Zoom call?

Is the boss gone?

I can鈥檛 take a chance

I simply remember that this too shall pass

And then I will put on pants听

No pretty dresses, just sweatpants or jammies

Some had no contact with those in their families

Going for days giving showers a rest

Personal hygiene was sketchy at best

Pets so confused no one left in the morning

No time to sleep, they missed life that was boring

Soon they learned how to get in on the fun

Walked past our screen and got 鈥渓ikes鈥 one by one

Need a haircut

Stylists鈥檚 doors shut

What am I to do?

I simply remember this might start a fad

And then I don鈥檛 feel so bad

Keeping our distance, apart we were staying

Had trouble hearing what others were saying

Try to remember when we gathered last

Wonder if hugs are a thing of the past?

Self-hosted parties like weddings, engagements

Posting the outcomes became entertainment

How many guests can be welcomed this week?

30? 100? Now back to 15.

No more hurry

Days all blurry

Take it as it comes

I simply remember this one day will end

And then I will see my friends

We couldn鈥檛 travel so had to stay local

Checked out the province and it made us vocal

There鈥檚 so much beauty and fun to be had

Staying at home really wasn鈥檛 so bad.

Then came the news of vaccines the world noted

Rolled up our sleeves and we stuck it to COVID

Positive test numbers on the decline

Fewer in hospital was a great sign

Not much longer

Masks a bother

Sanitizer smells.

We鈥檙e soon back to all of our favorite things听

So smile and ring the bells!
