YORKTON - St. Michael's School in Yorkton has kicked off their ‘One School, One Book Family Literacy Program’ for another year.

This year – the third for the program at the school – students are reading Charlotte's Web.

“The book was chosen because it is a classic tale of friendship and loyalty, two important qualities that the world always needs,” explained Tammie Latimer with the school.

Each family at the school received a copy of the book.

“Each night the parents are asked to read a chapter aloud to their children to share the love of reading and spend quality family time together,” explained Latimer.

“At school the next morning we ask a trivia question about the night's reading to keep the book alive at school all month too. We also have prizes for correct trivia answers.”

There are more than 420 students involved with Kindergarten to Grade 8 being a part of the reading adventure, said Latimer.

The program is possible through community support.

“We are grateful for the support from our School Community Council, Extravadance and Harvest Meats for our Literacy Program,” offered Latimer.

“We are also grateful to Stan Reed and Chad McDowell for carving the snow sculpture outside our school.”
