SASKATCHEWAN – Dangerous drugs are thought to be the cause of three fatal overdoses recently, all within the last week. RCMP believe fentanyl and methamphetamine were the root cause of the multiple deaths.
“Through police investigation, the illicit drugs suspected to have been consumed prior to the three fatal overdoses are believed to be methamphetamine (meth) or fentanyl made available to the public in a powder form,” said RCMP in a media release.
Assiniboia RCMP responded to an unresponsive man on Feb. 9, with EMS declaring the 21-year-old deceased at the scene.
“Police officers found crystals and an off-white powder at the scene suspected to be methamphetamine (meth) or fentanyl,” said RCMP.
On Feb. 13, Moosomin RCMP also responded to an unresponsive male, discovered in a hotel room. Emergency crews attempted CPR, but the 22-year-old man was also declared deceased at the scene. Again, police found white powder consistent with meth or fentanyl.
A day later, on Valentine’s Day, a 50-year-old woman was found outside a home in Preeceville. Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended the scene, and she was taken to hospital by EMS, where she was declared deceased.
“Autopsies and toxicology analyses will be performed by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service to confirm the nature and role of the illicit drugs in the suspected overdoses,” RCMP said.
While abstinence from illicit substances is optimal, police are recommending some safety precautions for those who do use such substances
