AHTAHKAKOOP CREE NATION – RCMP officers were shot at when they were trying to arrest a man on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation on April 10. One officer returned fire. No suspects or officers were injured.

The incident happened when Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team (WEST) were trying to locate and arrest 42-year-old Prentice Bowman, who was wanted on multiple warrants from Ahtahkakoop RCMP. The warrants were related to incidents over the past four months, including uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and other firearms related offences.

Prince Albert WEST observed two men walking in a residential area on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation and identified one as Prentice Bowman.

Officers approached and attempted to arrest Bowman, when the second man discharged a firearm at the officers.

Bowman was arrested at the scene. The second suspect, 24-year-old Sheldon Badger, fled the scene. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Ahtahkakoop Detachment, Prince Albert WEST, Critical Incident Response Team, Police Dog Services, Crime Reduction Team, and Saskatoon Police Service Air Services helped locate him.

About two-and-a-half hours later, police found Badger on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation. A firearm and ammunition were located and seized by officers.

Badger was charged with attempted murder, two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, and possession of a firearm without a license.

Badger appeared in court April 11 and remains in custody.

Bowman also remains in custody on warrants and no charges are being considered in relation to this incident, say RCMP.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert General Investigation Section (GIS) have taken over the investigation and continue to investigate with the assistance of Prince Albert WEST and Prince Albert Forensic Identification Section.

If you have information, report it to the local police service of your jurisdiction or detachment (310-RCMP). Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or .
