Police nab rural drunk driver with kids in vehicle

Police will be conducting more proactive patrols and check stops this holiday season.

PONTEIX – What began as pulling over a late-afternoon speeder turned into a much more serious situation for one lead-footed motorist on Dec. 3. Ponteix RCMP clocked the motorist at 158 km/hr, and initiated the stop.

“Subsequent investigation determined the 37-year-old male driver was impaired by alcohol,” RCMP said in a media release. “He had two young children in the car with him.”

The man was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and impaired operation while over the legal limit.

“The vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days,” police said. “Officers ensured the children were safe until a sober adult arrived.”

This patrol in particular coincided with National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, and is a good reminder of a familiar message.

“If you drink alcohol or consume cannabis, make plans for a ride home or stay where you are until it's safe to drive,” said RCMP. “If you see a suspected impaired driver, pull over and call 911.”
