WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 89 calls for service during the week of Dec. 4 to 10, resulting in a total of six charges. Of the charges, four were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada and two under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA). Only one of the week’s criminal charges was in relation to an individual who failed to attend court when required to do so.
On Monday afternoon, officers responded to a local business that reported an unknown male had entered the store and demanded the money from the cash register. The employee complied with the demand and the unknown male fled on foot. A description of the male was provided and officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect within a very short time. The adult male now faces a charge of robbery.
On Monday evening, officers were called to a report of vandalism at a public recreational facility. Officers were able to mediate the situation between the property representative and a youth without any charges resulting.
On Friday, officers responded to a reported theft from a business. Upon arrival, the officers found the suspects had exited the store but were still standing out front. Officers spoke to both parties and the matter was resolved without charges as the person returned inside to pay for the items and the business representative did not wish any further action. A similar incident occurred on Sunday also, as officers were called to a theft in progress but the business representative was satisfied with the suspect paying for the items and did not wish to pursue any further action.
During the week, the Weyburn Police Service received a few reports of vehicles being rummaged through and items being stolen from within. Owners are reminded to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables, or at very least keep them out of sight. Anyone who notices an individual or vehicle that seems suspicious is asked to call the police as soon as possible so that an officer can check it out at the time it is occurring.
Also during the week, officers responded to a few calls involving an intoxicated person who either required medical attention, was causing a disturbance in a public place, or was an unwanted house guest and the police were requested to assist removing the individual from the home. These incidents resulted in varying responses but no charges resulted.
During the festive season, the Weyburn Police Service will be conducting many traffic stops to check for driver sobriety and other traffic safety matters. Some of these traffic stops may result in a surprise as the Weyburn Police Service may randomly reward a sober or designated driver with a small token of appreciation by way of a gift card provided by SGI in an effort to promote safe driving.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
