SASKATOON — Saskatoon firefighters battled strong winds in putting out a structure fire in the 600 block of Ells Crescent in Kensington on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Saskatoon Fire Department’s dispatch received the report of a detached garage fire at 5:52 a.m.

The first arriving fire crews saw smoke and flames from the garage and advanced multiple hose lines to protect the houses and other nearby structures because of the strong winds. Winds were between 30 to 50 kilometres per hour, with wind gusts occasionally reaching 65 kph.

Although it was a single structure, the windy conditions made it more difficult for firefighters to contain the fire within the garage to avoid the risk of spreading to nearby houses, outside storages, and sheds.

They managed to bring the fire under control and successfully put it out. They ventilated the structure and made sure everything was safe before turning over the scene to a fire investigator who would examine it to identify the cause, origin, and damage estimate,

The owner and all occupants of the house where the garage fire happened were all accounted for, and there were no reports of injury to civilians or responding fire crews.
