LUSELAND — The Girl Guides troop in Luseland is looking forward to welcoming new members. At this time, 11 Sparks, 15 Embers, 12 Guides and five Pathfinders have signed up.
“Numbers are up slightly from last year. We usually run around 35 girls but this year we are over 40,” says leader Jean Halliday.
Activities are being planned for the beginning of the year. The Guides and Pathfinders will be doing an apple orchard tour, followed by a cookout and making apple crisp from the apples collected during the tour.
Nov. 8 will be enrollment night at the Luseland Bell Acres Golf and Country Club. The girls will be creating cards for residents at Pioneers Haven which will be handed out when the troop visits the facility in early December.
Girl Guides is meant to be a catalyst for girls empowering girls. Halliday says she always is on the lookout for activities that support that mission. She noticed article online about Pinwheels for Peace and after researching more about the cause, she said she felt this would be a good cause for the Luseland Guides to take part in.
The idea of Pinwheels for Peace was started by two art teachers in Florida, as a way for their students to express how they felt about what was happening in the world and their lives. The pinwheel was chosen by the teachers as the simple toy reminded most of their childhood when times were much more joyful and peaceful. Children could express their feelings through art or writing on the pinwheel, which then would be displayed Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace. Since it’s inception in 2005, the project has seen over four million pinwheels worldwide.
The girls will be creating their pinwheels in early November and placing them along Main Street in time for Remembrance Day.
