ESTEVAN - The longest-tenured active member of the Estevan Police Service was recognized during the Feb. 12 meeting of the Estevan board of police commissioners.
Sgt. Kevin Reed was presented with a 30-year bar during a brief ceremony attended by current and former EPS members, among others. Police Chief Jamie Blunden said you don't often get to celebrate somebody's 30-year anniversary with the organization, including policing.
"The experience and knowledge that Kevin brings to the table here for our service is astronomical," Blunden said.
The police chief noted that when Reed started 30 years ago, GPS and e-mail were not available to the EPS. Google and Facebook had yet to be invented, and mobile phones weren't prevalent.
Blunden noted an exemplary service medal is issued after 20 years with a police service, and after each 10 subsequent years, a bar is added to go with the service medal.
Reed thanked his husband and his family for the sacrifices they have made during his policing career.
"Policing is a career that can't be accomplished without the support of your family, because every time something happens, we run away from them to help everybody else."
Thirty goes by very fast, Reed said, especially since he has been fortunate to work with so many great officers during his career.
