MOOSOMIN — Rob Hill of the Maryfield Lions Club spoke at the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce meeting on March 28 about how more members are needed in order to form a Lions club in Moosomin.
Back in November, Hill led a push to form a Moosomin chapter after the town was identified as being large enough to accommodate a club. Since that time, 14 members have joined; however, to apply for a charter, there needs to be a few more people sign up.
“I would like to ask you for your support to push this club forward,” Hill told said at the meeting. “We need 20 members. We’re sitting at about 14 now, but with population that Moosomin has, we could have 40 members here.”
He said the club is not intending to compete with other service organizations, rather Lions have a history of helping fellow entities.
“If you’re doing a service project and you need help, the Lions will be there to help you,” Hill explained, noting how Lions across the province assist the Kinsmen with TeleMiracle each year as an example.
“We want to make our community a better place to live,” he said. “Does everybody here want to make their community a better place to live? I heard a lot of that this morning about how Moosomin needs to be a better place to live and for our young people to have things here for them.”
Hill explained that the Lions do not advocate for any particular political party or religious group, rather the focus is on projects that enhance the community overall.
Lions Clubs International is the biggest service organization in the world and has been around since 1917. In 1920, the first clubs were formed in Canada, and from there, expanded around the world to over 200 countries worldwide. There are 49,500 clubs around the world with 1.4 million members.
