Looking back on 2024, SportsCage host Barney Shynkaruk shares his favourite Saskatchewan sports moments from the past 12 months.
The University of Regina Rams run. From being picked to finish last in the regular season coaches pole, to an unpredictable Hardy Cup victory, we will always think about what might have been after a tight loss to Laval University in the Mitchell Bowl, but it was extremely fun to cover and watch that group led by Mark McConkey.
The provincial senior men’s hockey play downs. With the emergence of the Round Lake Bears, playing out of the Ochapowace First Nation, the hype around the team had rinks packed to the brim. The Bears came up short in the south final to the Lumsden Monarchs, losing in game three. The Monarchs would run into Kenaston in the provincial final but injury trouble would catch up to the Narchs and they would fall to the defending champs.
The Stanley Cup Final. I'm not an Edmonton Oilers fan by any means but I caught myself cheering for them as they tried the improbable: coming back from 3-0 down. The ending wasn’t meant to be but it was unbelievably exciting.
