YORKTON - With the arrival of warmer weather, the City of Yorkton will begin spring cleanup of the cemetery grounds.

With the cleanup effort the City is taking the opportunity to remind visitors of the guidelines in place to ensure a pleasant environment and respect for the final resting place of loved ones.

According to The Cemetery Bylaw, only approved monuments or memorials are considered permanent items that are allowed to remain in the cemetery year-round. All other items, such as those placed on a gravesite, headstone, or concrete foundation, are temporary and must be removed after 10 days. Flowers in containers that are not part of an approved monument may be removed. A second cleanup is completed every fall to prepare the cemetery for winter operations.

Temporary flowers and other items are permitted on the gravesite on the day of burial and can be left for 10 calendar days, after which staff will remove them. The City takes no responsibility for any items removed, damaged, or missing which have been placed in the cemetery by the public.

General upkeep of the cemetery is the exclusive responsibility of the City. This includes landscaping, planting or trimming flowers, shrubs or trees, grading, watering, construction, maintenance, mowing grass, laying sod and reseeding grass.

The Cemetery is always open for visiting. The Cemetery Administration Office is located at the Gallagher Centre, 455 Broadway Street West, and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays.
