WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 81 calls for service during the period of Aug. 28 to Sept. 3, resulting in a total of 11 charges. Of the week’s 11 charges, five were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, four under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and two under the City of Weyburn Bylaws. Of the five criminal charges, two were in relation to individuals who either failed to attend court as required, or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
On Wednesday afternoon, police responded to a reported theft of wire from a business location. Officers met the property representative on scene and discovered a significant amount of industrial copper cable had been cut and stolen from the property. This matter remains under investigation.
Late Monday night, members of the Weyburn Police Service responded to a reported domestic disturbance which resulted in an adult male being arrested and charged with assault and mischief to property. The male was released on conditions with an upcoming court date.
Early Tuesday afternoon, officers were called to business location where a large group of youth were found causing mischief to the property. After speaking to the youth involved, their parents/guardians, and the property representative, officers warned the youth of their actions and the possible consequences. No charges resulted.
On Wednesday evening, officers responded to a concerning mental health call involving an individual who was causing self-harm. The individual was apprehended and brought to the Weyburn General Hospital for treatment. Also on Wednesday evening, officers were called to a heavily intoxicated male who was unsuccessfully attempting to ride a bicycle. The adult male was arrested for public intoxication and lodged in cells until he was sober. No charges resulted.
Early Friday evening, members of the Weyburn Police Service and EMS responded to an urgent call involving an unconscious individual who had been found inside their apartment suite with life-threatening injuries. The individual was treated on scene, transported to the Weyburn General Hospital, and later flown by STARS to Regina for further care. This matter remains under investigation.
Late Friday night, police responded to a reported fight at a local establishment. A physical altercation occurred between patrons and charges are pending further investigation.
Throughout the week, officers dealt with several traffic complaints in relation to traffic being routed around multiple areas of road construction. Police monitored traffic in these locations and issued several warnings to motorists for speeding and failing to stop at stop signs.
On a special note, with school beginning this week, police remind motorists to use extra caution in school zones and to watch out for children crossing streets. Police will have a greater presence in those areas and will be conducting traffic enforcement. As a reminder to all motorists, the speed limit is 30 km/hr in school zones. Speeding in a school zone carries a heftier fine, for example, a driver going 45 km/hr in a school zone may receive a $290 fine.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
