Trial for woman accused of kidnapping baby doesn't proceed

Tori Sutherland was charged with abduction of a child two years ago.

MELFORT – A trial for a woman accused of abducting a four-month-old baby boy two years ago didn’t proceed Tuesday in Melfort Provincial Court.

Tori Sutherland’s charges of abduction of a child, break and enter, assault, and breach of a release order, have now been adjourned to Jan. 10, 2023 to be spoken to.

There have been numerous adjournments. A trial was initially set for September 2021 but was adjourned to June 2022. The trial didn’t proceed in June and was rescheduled to December.

Wakaw RCMP say they were investigating several disturbances on One Arrow First Nation Nov. 14, 2020, when they received a report that during one of the disturbances, a woman went uninvited into someone’s home, assaulted a woman and allegedly abducted an infant.

The infant was located unharmed at another residence about 30 to 45 minutes later on One Arrow First Nation and returned to his mother, say police.

Sutherland knew the victims and no weapons were seen or used, according to police. Wakaw and Rosthern RCMP arrested Sutherland the following month.
