NORTH BATTLEFORD – An inquest will be held next month into the death of 30-year-old Jilissa Nighttraveller [Napachit] at the Battlefords Union Hospital two years ago.

Nighttraveller was found unresponsive in a bathroom at the hospital on March 24, 2021. Hospital staff responded and lifesaving attempts were made, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and she was pronounced deceased. Nighttraveller had been transferred to the Battleford Union Hospital on March 24, 2021, by the North Battleford RCMP.

The inquest is scheduled to run from July 24 to July 28 at the Tropical Inn with Coroner Robert Kennedy presiding.

The Coroners Act requires the chief coroner to hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person's death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable. The purpose is to establish who died, when, where that person died, and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
